Dr Thomas Rosenberg operated on Woods' left knee in 2002. He removed cysts and drained fluid from around his anterior cruciate ligament. Not a major operation, but with the demand on his knee from 100 mph drives, even the smallest of injuries would certainly have an effect. However, the following February Woods returned to fitness for the Buick Invitational and won it with a smile. Guess where it was held? Torrey Pines, the venue for this year's U.S Open.
Woods' latest procedure was an arthroscopic surgery to address pain he'd been experiencing in his left knee since the middle of 2007. Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent, said that "cartilage damage was found during the procedure, which Dr. Rosenberg was able to correct."
Maybe though, just maybe the op might just take the edge off his game this time. If it does then the smart money could be on last year's winner Angel Cabrera (interviewed on page 24) who certainly sounds fully confident. Or even Californian specialist big Phil Mickelson? Or maybe Monty! No, don't be so silly!
All the runners and riders' chances for this year's US Open are broken down on page 19 to help you make your own mind up who will be the next Major winner.
Whoever takes the 108th US Open though, I'm sure it will be another hard old American battle!
Keep swinging!
